Illegal Motorboat Wakes Capsizes Three Dragon Boats in Portland

By Injury at Sea

Since late July, wake surfing boats have been causing disturbances in the Willamette River by creating turbulent waves in its no-wake zone. As a result of the illegal motorboat activity, three Dragon Boats have capsized, throwing dozens of paddlers overboard.

Paddlers on capsized boats have lost phones, keys, and wallets in the water. Some of the people who have been thrown overboard have special needs, such as being non-verbal and blind.

Recreational boats are obligated to follow water rules and regulations to protect others at sea. Boating injuries can occur when these laws are not followed. Dragon Boat racers are now on a mission to ensure that river safety laws are enforced to protect the safety of all boaters.
